Welcome to Arabella Yapp’s art gallery.
I am an artist from South London and studied fine art at Goldsmiths and Middlesex Universities.
I find inspiration in my environment, life events and friends and family. I invite people into my personal world. I try to interrogate the environments, places and individuals within my internal world. I live and work in a highly diverse, inner city setting and this inclusive experience is a key theme in my work. I investigate the choreography of relationships and the social harmony amongst people from diverse backgrounds in the world in which I live and work.
I populate my paintings with tiny portraits of the people l love to create imaginary worlds. I use painting to focus deeply on people, places and activities that bring me joy, like a visual gratitude diary.
Swimming and water are a major theme for me and symbolise happiness. I am an ardent swimmer and l share this love of water with my six siblings and have passed this on to my own children who feature swimming and diving in many of my paintings.
I love to use vibrant jewel- like colours. I focus on contrasting colours, trying to make them “sing” and vibrate against each other. I also love reflections and the effects of light on water. Recently I have been experimenting with metallic leaf to add a shimmering, glowing effect to my work. The metallic leaf paintings change throughout the day as the light changes and glow in artificial light at night.
